Tuesday Evening Pottery for High School Students and Adults
Join us in this eight week class where beginning and experienced potters will learn or refine throwing and hand-building techniques, learn to manipulate forms such as bowls, plates and vases on the wheel, and experience instruction in the use of slabs to make box forms, trivets, and other shapes. Each potter works independently at his or her own skill level. Students are encouraged to practice in the clay studio between class sessions to help maximize their learning experience. Please wear working clothes and tennis shoes (no sandals) to class. One 25# bag of clay, all glazes and the firing are included in the fee. Come have fun and find out what it’s like to get mud between your fingers!

Beginning Wheel-Thrown Pottery for Adults – Thursday
In this class, beginning and experienced potters will learn and refine throwing and hand-building techniques and manipulation of forms. Traditional glazing techniques will be used, plus optional paint with colored stains. Each potter works independently at his or her skill level. Students are encouraged to practice in the clay studio between class sessions. One 25# bag of clay, all glazes and the firing are included in the fee. Joan is anxious to help you get started in this amazing art form. She creates her own line of functional pottery featuring garden motifs.

Raku Firing Workshop and Potluck
Learn the ancient Japanese method of Raku. This ancient technique plays upon both control of the medium, methods, and materials as well as the magic of coincidence through a reduction firing. Truly make a one-of-a-kind ceramic family heirloom.
Bring your own bisque-ware or purchase it at the workshop. Please contact Carl Schick at 456-6600 for bisque-ware questions. Limited to vessels 14” and smaller, and up to 3 pots fired. If larger than 14” or more than 3 items, please call for additional fees. Come join us for an evening out in the exciting exploration of colors, flame and food!

Kid’s Pottery (Gr.4 & up) - Tuesdays
This 8 week class is for beginners and those looking into improve their pottery-making skills. How to use the potter’s wheel, slab roller, and extruder (large play-dough type of machine) will be covered, along with instruction on how to make plates, bowls, boxes and assembling techniques for hand building. The clay and glazes used are food safe, and have been used in the oven and microwave. Clay along with glazes and firings are included. Please wear tennis shoes (no sandals) for using the kick wheels.

Pottery 4 Kids (Gr.3 & up) - Thursdays
Students will learn the fundamentals of throwing pottery on a potter’s wheel. Those who prefer hand building are allowed to do so. During class students will learn the process of making vessels, firing and glazing pieces. They also learn about sharing the studio and how to clean up the workspace and the wheels. They will meet new kids and everyone will have a good time.

Hand Building in Clay
Like to play in the mud? Here’s your chance to create permanent objects that will last forever. Hand built objects can be sophisticated, playful, useful, decorative and for sure fun to create.
In this course, students will learn the basic skills involved in working clay without the wheel. Students will learn slab building, coil construction, and pinch pot techniques in the effort to create objects of interest.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, students will create. Then on Thursdays students will return to paint and glaze. One more firing needs to take place after glazing. Students are asked to pick up their pieces within two weeks of the last class.

Summer Souvenir Book (For ages 8 & up)
Now that summer’s essentially over, you’ve had the vacation, been to camp, stayed with the cousins – what do you do with the pile of memorabilia that was collected. An artful solution is offered in this class. Theresa is a professional book artist and will guide you through the process of making a cool book to match the warm memories. Bring everything – brochures, photos, tickets, even the rocks and shells you picked at the beach. Adults welcome!!

Junk Sculpture (Ages 6 & up)
Put on your creativity cap and think outside the box – or the junk drawer. In this class, students will be creating sculptural pieces utilizing the Arts Center’s collection of ‘junk’. Feel free to bring your own also. We will concentrate on shapes rather than on the actual objects and combine shapes to discover what new, cool forms evolve.
